Colchester United have produced a major upset in the third round of the Carabao Cup, defeating Tottenham 4-3 on penalties.

The two sides could not be split during regular play and were forced to decide the result at the spot, with Lucas Moura’s miss allowing Colchester midfielder Tom Lapslie to fire home the winning penalty.

Tottenham dominated possession throughout the match with 75% possession, compared to Colchester’s 25%. They also fired four shots on target, while Colchester could not manage any on target.

Regardless, Colchester held their own and got a memorable victory.

While Spurs did have some second-string players take the field, regular stars such as Dele Alli, Son Heung-min and Christian Eriksen all made appearances during the match.

The victory was the first time in 44 years that Colchester reached the last 16 of the competition.

It was a result that sent the fans into pandemonium, sparking a pitch invasion following the penalty shootout.

Tottenham is now winless in the last three matches across all competitions, with a 2-1 loss to Leicester in the Premier League and a 2-2 draw with Olympiacos in the Champions League capping off a disastrous week for them.

On the other hand, Colchester are 10th in EFL League Two and hold a two-game winning run in their league.
