The final round of the Bundesliga is upon us with of the most exciting title races in history still in the balance.
Six-time reigning champions Bayern Munich sit top of the table with 75 points and face Eintracht Frankfurt on the final day, who will likely need to win to keep their Champions League hopes alive.
Trailing the Munich club are Borussia Dortmund on 73 points. Lucien Favre’s men will travel to take on Borussia Mönchengladbach who will also be looking for a win to ensure Champions League football.
Bayern have a far superior goal difference to their yellow and black rivals, boasting a +52 difference compared to +35, meaning that a win or draw against Frankfurt will hand the Bavarians the title. They have defeated Frankfurt on the last two occasions, which include a 3-0 win earlier in the season as well as a 5-0 romp in the DFL Supercup.
An unlikely Bayern loss, however, will give Dortmund their only chance at a first Bundesliga crown since 2012.
If Bayern do suffer defeat tomorrow, Dortmund will need to beat Mönchengladbach away from home to jump Niko Kovac’s side in the standings by a solitary point.
They were successful in defeating Mönchengladbach on matchday 17, winning 2-1 at Westfalenstadion. Since then however, Dortmund have looked like a shadow of themselves, particularly on the road.
If, as expected, Dortmund are unsuccessful in ending Bayern’s decade of dominance, they will certainly be ruing their missed chance after leading the competition by 9 points midway through the season.
