Barcelona’s 3-0 thrashing of Liverpool was proof that the Spanish giants have the quality to win the Champions League this season.
Luis Suarez opened the scoring against his former club, however it was Lionel Messi that put the game to bed, scoring a late double to give Barcelona a hefty advantage going into the second leg.
While Liverpool still has a slight chance of overcoming the deficit, Barcelona has the upper hand and it gives them the opportunity to win yet another trophy this season.
With three matches remaining and a vastly superior goal difference to second-placed Atletico Madrid, Barcelona has secured the La Liga title this season and they currently hold a nine-point advantage at the top. They have also not lost a league match since mid-November 2018.
They also will play in the final of the Copa del Rey against Valencia towards the end of May, which shows their dominance this season in Spanish football.
Another trophy in the Champions League would cap off a fantastic season and reward them for their strong performances.
With the likes of Messi, Suarez, Philippe Coutinho and Ousmane Dembele up front, the Barcelona attack provides a dangerous threat to opposition defences. Messi alone has netted 48 goals in 46 appearances across all competitions this season, which highlights just how strong the Barcelona attack is.
In addition to this, with the likes of Marc-Andre ter Stegen in goals, and Nelson Semedo, Gerard Pique, Clement Lenglet and Jordi Alba in defence, it is difficult for the opposition to break down the Spanish giants.
If they successfully hold on to their first leg lead, Barcelona will face either Ajax or Tottenham in the final, which will be held in Madrid.
Ajax have the upper hand heading into the second leg and are also doing well this season. A matchup between the two would be a delightful spectacle, however anything can happen in football and next week’s second leg action is essential viewing for football fans around the world.
