Ajax have continued to show their worth, defeating Tottenham 1-0 away from home in the Champions League semi-finals.
In a strong performance, Ajax now have the advantage going into the second leg and are the favourites to reach the final, where they will be a massive chance of being crowned European champions.
The journey to the semi-final has seen Ajax win some big matches, with the club finishing second in their group without defeat.
In the round of 16, Ajax famously overcame a 2-1 deficit to beat Real Madrid 4-1 at the Santiago Bernabeu. It was the biggest result for the club in some time.
After a 1-1 draw with Juventus in the first leg of the quarter-final, Ajax produced a stunning result by winning the second leg 2-1 at Juventus Stadium. It proved that Erik ten Hag’s men feared no one and were a threat in the competition.
Their victory in England over Tottenham is yet another chapter in Ajax’s strong season and a good performance in the second leg will allow them to progress to the final.
It is important to note that these victories have been away from home – the final will be held at the Wanda Metropolitano in Madrid, which would be like an away match for Ajax if they progress.
Domestically, Ajax have performed just as well. They currently sit in first position with two matches remaining in the Eredivisie. While they are equal on points with second-placed PSV, Ajax have a ten-goal better goal difference over them.
Ajax will also take part in the final of the KNVB Cup on Sunday, where they will face Willem II. They are a great chance of winning a treble this season.
Looking at their squad, there are some great players that do not get the attention that some of their other Champions League counterparts receive.
19-year-old Matthijs de Ligt has been a standout this season and has been linked with a big move at the end of the season. 21-year-old Frenkie de Jong has been outstanding and will move to Barcelona in July. 22-year-old Donny van de Beek is yet another who has performed exceptionally this campaign.
What these players have in common is that they were involved at Jong Ajax – the reserve team of Ajax. Many more in the squad graduated from here and their success shows just how strong their talent is. Ajax certainly have a bright future with many more players to come.
While they may not be able to hold on to all their players at the end of the season, Ajax have what it takes to achieve European glory this season and there is a bright and exciting outlook for the club.
