With the Women’s CONCACAF championship not having the prestige the European Championship has – the US will look at the Olympics as an opportunity to test themselves as they prepare to defend their crown at the 2023 World Cup.
While the US are yet to qualify for the Summer Games, something drastic would have to occur for them not to be there, given the confederation has two spots in the tournament.
The dates for the 2020 CONCACAF Olympic qualification tournament have not been announced.
Should Carly Lloyd be selected she will have the opportunity to add to her Olympic goal tally, having scored eight Olympic goals while teammate Alex Morgan has five.
The Dutch meanwhile will compete at their first ever Olympics and will look to build on their recent success.
So far, only Japan, Brazil, Netherlands, Great Britain, Sweden and New Zealand have qualified with another six yet to come.
The Matildas will have the chance to qualify in March through the AFC Qualification campaign, with Asia – like CONCACAF – being allocated two spots in the Games.
