Scotland have been eliminated from the Women’s World Cup after Argentina sealed an incredible comeback from three goals behind to keep their hopes of progressing alive.
The Scots were in full control early and translated an hour of dominance into what seemed to be an unassailable lead with Kim Little opening the scoring inside the opening twenty minutes before Jen Beattie and Erin Cuthbert extended their lead after the break.
With twenty minutes to play, it seemed as if the result was beyond doubt as Scotland were closing in on a spot in the final 16.
However, Argentina responded as substitute Milagros Menendez pulled one back before an own-goal from Scotland goal-keeper Lee Alexander thrusted the Argentines right back into the contest.
With time running out, controversy would reign supreme as Argentina were awarded a penalty as Sophie Howard tripped Aldana Cometti inside the area.
The initial penalty was saved brilliantly by Alexander but after VAR intervention, it had to be retaken due to Alexander’s feet being over the goal-line resulting in Florencia Bonsegundo slamming home the equaliser to the despair of the Scottish players who saw another result slip through their fingers.
As a result, Argentina stay alive in their hopes for a spot in the final 16 as they look to progress as one of the better ranked third placed sides.
