Jan Vertonghen is hopeful that Tottenham teammate Christian Eriksen will remain at the club amid interest from Real Madrid.
Eriksen has been linked with a move to the Spanish club this summer for a reported potential fee of £130 million, as Zinedine Zidane gets set to rebuild his squad.
Vertonghen is hoping that Eriksen decides to remain at Spurs however, just as he did last season.
“Obviously when the transfer window starts there are a lot of rumours, but there were rumours last year and everyone stayed together, so I’m hopeful,” he said.
“Christian is a great player. I have known him since he was 16, played with him since he was 16 or 17 [at Ajax] and I hope he’s with Tottenham next season. He’s an exceptional player.”
It is no surprise that the world’s biggest club has come calling for the Danish superstar, as Zidane looks to team Eriksen up with recently signed Eden Hazard.
Eriksen was instrumental for Tottenham this season which saw the club reach their first ever UEFA Champions League final – Spurs ultimately going down 2-0 to Liverpool.
It would be big shoes to fill if Eriksen does make the move and would virtually force Tottenham to spend in the transfer window for the first time in over 12 months.
