One of Australia’s greatest ever players has officially announced his retirement from football. Tim Cahill – Australia’s leading goal scorer – told Optus Sport that he is hanging up the boots from domestic football after retiring from international duty in July 2018.
Cahill spent the bulk of his career in England with six years at Millwall (1998-2004) and eight at Everton (2004-2012).
He played over 400 games and scored over 100 goals in the English leagues.
Stints in the USA with New York Red Bulls, China with Shanghai Shenhua and Hangzhou Greentown, Australia with Melbourne City and India with Jamshedpur have rounded out the last half decade of his career.
The 39-year-old joked that he was “an old man in football years” and is looking at ways to stay in football without actually playing.
He is looking into punditry work while also exploring coaching options; he will start his A licence in the near future.
