Not even the Leichardt Oval barriers could keep Sydney FC from celebrating as debut goals from Reza Ghoochannejhad and Cameron Devlin guided the Sky Blues to victory.
Sydney FC – sitting in second place – defeated Adelaide United 2-0 in their FFA Cup final rematch and maintain their unbeaten run at Leichardt Oval.
It did not take long for the home side who edge ahead with Ghoochannejhad finishing off a vintage Sydney FC team goal after a smart flick from Adam Le Fondre saw the Iranian capitalise in the 14th minute.
Star midfielder Milos Ninkovic then had the Leichardt crowd on the edge of their seats when his chipped attempt was saved by Paul Izzo at the last moment.
Buoyed by his debut goal – Ghoochannejhad nearly had a second on the cusp of half time only to be denied by the far post.
At the other end the visitors failed to worry the Sky Blues and despite having a firm grip on the game the home side had to wait until Devlin’s 94th minute goal to seal victory.
The 20-year-old netting his debut goal – finishing off a well worked counter attack before celebrating with the home supporters who toppled over the barrier.
The win solidifies Sydney’s position on the table and will give them confidence over a third consecutive win when they host Melbourne City next week.
Meanwhile Adelaide United host Perth Glory in a must win clash at home.
