There was plenty of action across England with all four divisions in action.
Premier League
Newcastle United defender Fabian Schar stole the headlines from the first lot of this week’s midweek Premier League goals, scoring a scorching long-range effort in his side’s victory 2-0 victory over Burnley.
It was also a night to remember for Sean Longstaff who scored his first goal for the Magpies.
Just hours after unveiling Brendan Rodgers as their new boss, Leicester City swung straight into action accounting for Brighton and Hove Albion 2-1.
Socceroos keeper Mat Ryan was left frustrated as the Foxes grabbed a 2-0 lead through Demarai Gray and Jamie Vardy, with Davy Propper scoring a consolation for the visitors.
Huddersfield Town gave their fans a much-needed boost with a surprise 1-0 victory over Wolves.
Steve Mounie was the hero for the home side, scoring a dramatic injury time goal. Aaron Mooy was heavily involved in the build-up delivering a wonderful cross which had the Wolves’ defence at sixes and sevens.
Everton relieved some pressure on Marco Silva as they claimed a 3-0 victory away to relegation threatened Cardiff City. Midfielder Gylfi Sigurdsson bagged a double before Domenic Calvert-Lewin rounded out the result in injury time.
Championship
There were plenty of eyes on Leeds United’s trip to Queens Park Rangers as a victory would have seen them move back to the top of the table.
But it proved to be a frustrating evening for Marcelo Bielsa’s men as they fell 1-0 courtesy of a Luke Freeman, with Socceroo Massimo Luongo grabbing an assist.
Elsewhere, Steven Fletcher was the hero for Sheffield Wednesday as they came out on top 2-0 against Brentford in a battle between two of the division’s in form clubs.
Bristol City fell to their second straight defeat as Birmingham City gained a vital three points in their push for the playoff places.
Goals to Connor Mahoney and Michael Morrison saw the visitors move within three points of the Robins who sit in sixth place, Famara Diedhou was on the scoresheet for Bristol.
Hull City moved into the top half of the table with a 2-1 victory over Millwall. Jarrod Bowen once again found his way onto the scoresheet before Shaun Hutchinson equalised for the visitors.
Marc Pugh’s 42nd minute strike proved to be the difference between the two sides.
League One and Two
Wednesday morning’s fixtures presented just two matches across the third and four tiers of English football.
In League One, Shrewsbury Town dented Doncaster Rovers bid to expand the margin between them and their playoff rivals after they defeated them 2-0.
Josh Laurent and Tyrese Campbell were on the scoresheet for the home side as they moved five points clear of the drop zone.
While in League Two, Lincoln City failed to extend their lead at the top of the table in a 1-all draw with Exeter City.
Matt Jay gave Exeter the lead in the 22nd minute, but the Imps were forced to wait for their equaliser until second half stoppage time as John Akinde earned his side a share of the spoils.
