A first senior goal from Luke Ivanovic and a twelfth for Adam Le Fondre was enough for Sydney FC to see off Melbourne City with a 2-0 win at Jubilee Oval.
Sydney FC, who were fresh off a defeat against the Victory came into the game looking to get back to winning ways and were rewarded when Ivanovic got in behind the City defence to slam home the opener.
The youngster, who was starting his first game for the side showed brilliant composure to put the ball past Galekovic and showed his immense promise from the get go.
However, he was forced off with an injury before half-time for new signing, Mitch Austin who played his first game for the club.
Sydney were full of momentum as returning Socceroo Rhyan Grant played through Paulo Retre but his resulting finish ricocheted off the post and into the hands of Galekovic.
City began to push in the second stanza as Riley McGree forced a brilliant save out of Andrew Redmayne before Austin found himself unbelievably missing with an open net.
Melbourne City continued to search for an equaliser and were awarded a penalty after Milos Ninkovic brought down Bart Schenkeveld inside the area.
The resulting penalty from McGree was brilliantly saved by Redmayne as City could not break down the Sydney wall in front of the sticks.
The Sky Blues were able to see out the result when Le Fondre slammed home the sealer and kept Sydney right in the hunt for second place.
City now find themselves in fifth place but with a healthy nine point gap on seventh placed Newcastle Jets as they look to solidify a spot in the finals series.
Steve Corica’s men will next travel to Brisbane to face the out of form Roar on Friday night while Melbourne City face Adelaide United at home on Saturday where they could unleash new signings, Jamie Maclaren and Shayon Harrison.
