German international Mats Hummels has rejoined Borussia Dortmund after three years at Bayern Munich.
Hummels, 30, will return to Dortmund for a fee of €38m where he rose to prominence in the early stages of his career including a run to the UEFA Champions League final in 2013 and becoming an integral part of Jurgen Klopp’s Bundesliga winning side in 2011 and 2012.
This is the second time Hummels has made this exact move – after he left Bayern’s youth-setup to join Dortmund in 2008 after failing to break into the first team.
During his time away from Der BVB, Hummels enjoyed success at Munich winning the Bundesliga in each of the three seasons he spent there but fell out of favour last season in Niko Kovac’s title winning side.
Hummels, who has featured for the national side 70 times, will be looking to get his career back on track at Dortmund who have been relatively active this transfer window already signing Julian Brandt, Thorgan Hazard and Nico Schulz as they look to make a surge towards their first Bundesliga in seven years.
This also comes in light of coach Lucien Favre extending his contract for a further two seasons which will keep him at the club until 2021.
