Following Derby’s massive second leg victory over Leeds United, the play-off final for promotion into the Premier League is now known.

Derby will play Aston Villa at Wembley Stadium on May 27 English time, with one club to return to the Premier League after an absence.

Derby were last in the Premier League in 2008, however had a shocking stint during that time. Should they get promoted, they can make up for that disappointing campaign.

Aston Villa on the other hand have the chance to return to the Premier League for the first time since 2016. For the last three seasons, they have been playing Championship football and their fans hope that they can make a reappearance in the top division.

Villa have been one of the most in-form teams in the competition, ending the season strongly after a horrible start under Steve Bruce. Their current manager Dean Smith has made a positive impact on the club, which included a 12-game unbeaten streak from late February until the end of April. Going by their form, they would be heading into the final as favourites for promotion.

Under manager Frank Lampard, Derby finished the season in sixth position, however, did not lose their last six matches of the season. Overcoming Leeds would have given the squad a massive confidence boost and made them believe that they can match it with Villa.

The two have met twice this season, with Aston Villa winning both matches with a combined score of 7-0. They will feel that they have a mental edge over their opponent.

Promotion for Derby would be intriguing, as it would mean a likely return for Lampard to the Premier League, where we will face his former clubs Chelsea, West Ham and Manchester City.

Currently, it is too difficult to know who the final team will be that gets promoted into the Premier League. While Villa is the form team, Derby certainly have what it takes to be the victor.
