A last-minute defeat to the in-form Western United did little towards crashing Sydney FC’s premiership party, as the rest of the competition sets its sights on the finals
The title was clinched three weeks ago when Wellington were held to a one-all draw against Adelaide United – wrapping up a fourth premiership for the Sky Blues.
Sydney finished nine points clear of second placed Melbourne City despite only winning one match out of six since the restart.
Sydney FC now sits one behind Melbourne Knights – who won five National Soccer League premierships – and enter this season’s finals series as favourites to clinch a record fifth championship, which would see them overtake Marconi, South Melbourne, Sydney City and Melbourne Victory – all of whom have won four.
The match was just as significant for A-League newcomers Western United who capped off its inaugural home-and-away season with a finals berth.
A stoppage time goal to new recruit Steven Lustica won it at the death after Adam Le Fondre’s 52nd minute goal cancelled out Besart Berisha’s first half opener.
As things stand Jamie Maclaren and Adam Le Fondre sit tied on 20 goals in the race for the Golden Boot with Besart Berisha lurking behind them on 18.
Western United meets Melbourne City in the final match of the regular season, a fixture which has more than just the golden boot riding on it.
A win will see Western United finish third and schedule a meeting with Perth Glory in the first week of the finals, whereas a draw or a loss would result in them finishing fourth or fifth respectively and play Brisbane Roar in the first week.
