The FFA Cup resumes tonight, with two A-League clubs playing member federation clubs, while a local derby also will take place.
There is action taking place all around the country and there are plenty of choices for fans to watch.
In Adelaide, Campbelltown City will host Melbourne City at the Steve Woodcock Sports Centre. The South Australian side currently sit atop NPL SA, four points ahead of second placed Adelaide Olympic with a goal difference of 20. Melbourne City are currently in a period of transition, with new manager Erick Mombaerts taking charge of his first competitive match. This could prove to be a danger game for City, who currently are in their pre-season.
Maitland Sportsground, approximately 35km away from Newcastle, will see Maitland FC face off against Central Coast Mariners. Maitland are fourth in NPL Northern NSW and feature players with A-League experience such as Matt Thompson and Nick Cowburn. The Mariners have struggled in this competition before, with early eliminations at the hands of Green Gully and Blacktown City in recent years. This match will be an entertaining game, with a potential upset on the cards.
A local derby will take place at the Ilinden Sports Centre in the Sydney suburb of Rockdale, as St George FC battle Sydney United. It has been a difficult season for St George, who currently sit 11th in NPL 2 NSW, while United are fourth in NPL NSW. It will be a tough task for St George, with United featuring a handful of players with A-League experience such as Matthew Sim and Yianni Perkatis. Regardless, anything can happen in the FFA Cup and this promises to be an exciting match.
The FFA Cup makes its way down to Tasmania, with South Hobart hosting Marconi Stallions at Blundstone Arena. South Hobart are third in NPL Tasmania, however have played in this competition before. Marconi are fifth in NPL NSW and their players with A-League experience include Marko Jesic and Mitchell Mallia. The cold conditions could work in South Hobart’s favour, a big contrast to the warmer weather that Sydney has experienced in recent weeks.
The final match of tonight’s action will take place at Canberra’s Deakin Stadium, with Tigers FC facing of against Hume City. Tigers FC are having a great season, with the club currently sitting first in NPL ACT, while Hume City are fifth in NPL VIC. The home side’s story is a great one, with the club based approximately 116 km away in the town of Cooma. Hume’s previous FFA Cup experience may prove to be the difference, however this will be a great occasion for Tigers FC.
