A second-half goal to Joaquin Correa has sent the Biancocelesti to the Coppa Italia final after a tight two-legged affair with AC Milan.
The result is a measure of revenge for the Roman based side who have been in a range of tense affairs with the Rossoneri for the better part of a year.
It was in this exact fixture last season where Milan edged Lazio in a penalty-shootout at the Stadio Olimpico after a goalless tie over the two legs.
This season they had already played out two very tight contests where Milan had most recently won an emotional one goal thriller thanks to a late Franck Kessie penalty.
It just seemed like Simone Inzaghi’s men just didn’t have the Rossoneri’s number.
However, last night the away side nailed their tactics with a swift counter-attacking display allowing a Milan midfield which sorely missed the creativity of Lucas Paqueta and Giacomo Bonaventura to have much of the ball for long periods of time.
As a result, the Rossoneri lacked the cohesion with their front three to create numerous opportunities and were becoming frustrated as the game wore on.
After one quick break from Ciro Immobile, the Milan defence were completely at sea – allowing for Correa to get in behind and tap home the eventual winner.
The win did come at a price for Lazio as star midfielder Sergej Milinkovic-Savic limped off with an ankle injury which could see him miss a prolonged period of time.
While in the stands, Lazio fans will face the full force of the FIGC after racist chants towards Milan midfielder Tiemoue Bakayoko which is sure to have serious repercussions.
Lazio will face either Atalanta or Fiorentina in the final who played out a highly entertaining 3-3 draw in the first leg a couple months prior in Florence.
For Milan, their mini slump continues as the pressure mounts on Gennaro Gattuso once more ahead of five crucial contests to end their season with only a head-to-head advantage of Atalanta keeping them in fourth spot.
