Perth Glory have once again justified their tag as championship favourites – rectifying a two-goal deficit late against Melbourne City to salvage a point.
Hot and frustrated – it appeared this would not be Perth Glory’s night.
Despite City missing Ritchie De Laet and Bart Schenkeveld – the home side got off to the best possible start after Jamie Maclaren scored for the fourth consecutive match – heading a pin-point cross from captain Scott Jamieson in the 25th minute for the opener.
Maclaren was then gifted a second from the penalty spot after the ball struck Shane Lowry’s arm inside the box – giving City a 2-0 lead heading into half time.
The West Australians did kick into gear in the second half but their quest for goals was made all the more difficult with Eugene Galekovic frustrating the visitors with some fine goalkeeping.
Though the Glory were rewarded for their persistence and found a break through in the 83rd minute when Jason Davidson found substitute Joel Chianese whose header bounced in to set up a nervy final few minutes for the home side.
As stoppage time ticked over – Perth Glory continued to press and found an equaliser through their star and captain Diego Castro.
Castro’s 91st minute strike from distance, described as a ‘worldie’ by opposition coach Warren Joyce, stunned AAMI Park and Galekovic who barely saw it coming.
The result a difficult one for City to take – leaving them just four points clear inside the top six while the Glory extend their lead atop of the table to six points.
