While the likes of Serie A and Ligue 1 have been wrapped up for some time, the results on the weekend have made the race for the title tighten up in some of the top leagues of Europe.
Arguably the most jaw-dropping result of the weekend was Manchester City’s 6-0 demolition of Chelsea.
Not only was it unexpected, it sees City at the summit at Liverpool’s expense, thanks to a superior goal difference.
Sergio Agüero’s hat trick, Raheem Sterling’s double and İlkay Gündoğan’s goal all contributed to Chelsea’s worst loss in all competitions since 1991.
While the win is full of positives for City who now have a great chance at winning back to back titles, the loss could not be worse for the Blues.
Coach Maurizio Sarri is under no illusions as to what the defeat could mean for his future at the club.
Meanwhile in Germany, Borussia Dortmund has let a three goal lead slip, ultimately drawing 3-3 with Hoffenheim at Westfalenstadion.
It was beautiful football from Dortmund with Jadon Sancho opening the scoring after some neat interplay with Łukasz Piszczek.
Sancho then had a shot parried right into the path of Mario Gotze for his side’s second.
By the 66th minute Raphaël Guerreiro had scored goal number three and Dortmund looked to be in cruise control.
Three goals in 12 minutes from Hoffenheim – an Ishak Belfodil double and one to Pavel Kadeřábek – saw the points shared.
That result coupled with Bayern’s 3-1 win over Schalke saw Dortmund’s lead at the top of the Bundesliga cut to only 5 points.
