Sydney FC defender Rhyan Grant has signed a three-year contract to remain at the club, in a major boost for the Sky Blues.
“It’s obviously a huge honour for me to stick around at such a big club, like you said I’ve been here for a long time and definitely feel like part of the furniture,
“It was always my priority to try and hang around if I could, now they’re stuck with me for another few years which is nice,” Grant said on Evenings on FNR.
Fresh off a strong individual effort for the Socceroos in the UAE at the Asian Cup, Grant will be a step closer to becoming a one-club player.
The 27-year-old has played 155 A-League matches for the Sky Blues and has scored seven goals. He has won two A-League championships so far, including in the 2016/17 season where he famously scored the equaliser for Sydney FC that forced the Grand Final into extra time.
He has overcome adversity throughout his career, rupturing his ACL multiple times that left him out of action for lengthy periods. However, every time he has come back from injury, he has returned to top form.
In recent times, his choice of hairstyle has raised eyebrows, with his ‘mullet’ gaining international attention at the Asian Cup.
“A lot of soccer players tend to have the same haircut and look pretty spick-and-spam, I wanted to be a bit different and I thought the mullet was pretty cool so I’m rolling with it.”
Talking about his Asian Cup experience on Evenings on FNR, Grant said he thinks Asia is very underrated. “They’re getting better every year, it certainly opened my eyes to just how good these countries can be.”
Grant has risen from just a youth prospect to a key player, and his tank and ability to run games out has him in high regard.
The new contract will ensure that Sydney can hold onto the right-back as they fight to avenge their semi-final defeat last season.
