In a shock move, ambitious NPL club Avondale have decided to part ways with long time head coach Anthony Barbieri.

Barbieri’s contract was set to expire at the end of this latest campaign, which saw the club qualify for the NPL Victoria Grand Final and the quarter finals of the FFA Cup – all the while playing some of the most exciting football in the state.

Their 4-3 semi final win over Bentleigh Greens ranks as one of the most improbable comebacks ever seen in the competition.

In seven years at the helm, the now 41 year-old Barbieri lead the club from State League 3 obscurity to the pinnacle of Victorian football, achieving a staggering 4 promotions before establishing themselves amongst the elite clubs in the top tier.

FNR sources believe Barbieri was only willing to commit to a one year extension, while the club wanted someone in place longer term.

Avondale FC declined to comment for this story.

For further discussion, tune into Evenings on FNR tonight from 7pm AEST.
